BASIC DRESSMAKING
This course is suitable for beginners or as a refresher course for those who are returning to sewing after a considerable time. The course is arranged in 4 blocks, each of which lasts for 6 weeks, with a 3hour lesson each week. There are 4 blocks, each one dealing with a particular garment. The cost of each of the 4 blocks is £90 plus a materials charge of £20.
The course looks at the equipment you will need, including a sewing machine. We then look at using commercial sewing patterns and the information you can get and interpret from the pattern and the envelope. You will then make a fitting sample, which is a fitted bodice with long sleeves and a straight skirt. This will give you a basic master pattern, which you will use to assess any alterations you will need to make to patterns you use in the future.
You will learn a wide range of sewing techniques in a practical way as you make the following garments:
straight skirt - darts; seams; lining; inserting a zip; adding a waistband; straight hems
semi-fitted blouse - gathers; pleats; collar; facings; buttonholes; sleeves; cuffs; curved hem; yoke.
dress - princess curved seams; shaped facings; short fitted sleeves; lining; collar
trousers - fly zip; curved seams; pockets; fitting
You will have learned many of the basic techniques you will need to make your own clothes in the future.
